What Is Uterine Fibroid?

Fibroids are abnormal growth in or on the uterus. Type of the fibroid depends on their location. Estrogen and Progesterone are the hormones that stimulate the growth of fibroid and that’s why during pregnancy fibroid grows much and after menopause, it shrinks. Also, family history, genetic changes, or other growth factors are responsible for the development of fibroid.

Usually, fibroid doesn’t produce any symptoms even though it depends upon their location, numbers, size and which can produce symptoms like heavy bleeding between and during periods, pain in the pelvis and lower back, menstrual cramping, swelling and enlargement in the abdomen, difficulty in emptying bladder, frequent urination, etc. Complications which may develop due to fibroids are anemia because of heavy blood loss during menses and in some cases it can create problems in pregnancy.
